Our racer, The Scorpion, took home the title of “Best Design” at the 2011 Power Tool Drag Race at the Columbus Idea Foundry.
The Scorpion Power Tool Drag Racer is powered by a 3hp circular saw. The frame is 1/2″ steel tubing with HDPE tail sections and claws. The chain drive system powers 2 monster 22″ saw blades complete with years worth of rust from sitting at the bottom of a water filled drum in Research Alloy’s scrapyard. The “claws” are ski style runners to keep the scorpion headed in the right direction. The Scorpion was almost too scary looking to turn on, and underwhelming when we did finally get up the nerve. The monster 22″ saw blades just proved too mush mass for the saw motor to get turning at any real speed. So in a race to the finish we won… best looking. The Power Tool Drag race is a fun event and we look forward to improving our design next year when the Power Tool Drag race is held at the Mini Maker Faire.
